Chat Help

The Chat Room is equiped with Java and IRC. See IRC instructions below. Java is accessed through the 'Java chat' button on various pages of this web site. If not already installed you can get Java here. Once Java is running on your computer, click on the 'Java chat' button. Enter your Username and click 'Connect'. You may be asked at some point to open a port in your firewall depending on your computer platform. Java may give a warning applet asking to 'Run' or 'Cancel'. Click 'Run'. Java may give another warning asking if you want to block potentially unsafe components... You must click on 'No' in order to enter the chat. Do not worry, your computer is not at risk on this web site.

Before entering chatrooms please read the Chat Guidelines.

To connect through Internet Relay Chat (IRC):

Before you can enter this type of chat you must have a separate piece of software, provided by third party vendors, such as mIRC, Colloquy, Mibbit and others. The most popular software for this is mIRC and can be found here. You can choose to use it for free. These instructions for mIRC will be typical to other chat clients. Your version of mIRC may differ slightly from pics below.

After installing mIRC and choosing "Try It" or optionally paying to register it, follow instructions below:

  • In the Options/Category/Connect applet, enter your Nickname and Alternate Nickname.
  •
  • mirc1
  •
  • Then in Category, select Servers and then click Add.
  •
  • mirc2
  •
  • Now fill in the following three fields:
  • Description: Harbor (or anything you want to call it)
  • IRC Server is the Harbor IP address: 209.133.11.191
  • Port: 6667
  • Then click Add
  •
  • mirc3
  •
  • With Harbor highlighted click on Select
  •
  • mirc4
  •
  • You will then find yourself back to the first applet window and you will click on Connect.
  • When connected type in the bottom bar: /join #bipolar.
  • You can now enter the chat room.

Should you have any questions or trouble, enter the chat through java first and get help from anyone familiar with IRC. The majority of current chatters use mIRC or something similar.
